"PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A water main break flooded part of Main Street in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia late Friday morning, forcing road closures and leaving several businesses dealing with extensive damage.
An 8-inch water main burst around 10:20 a.m., sending water pouring onto the 4300 block of Main Street.
Emergency crews responded quickly to contain the flooding and begin repairs.
"It's sizeable, especially when you have gallons and gallons of water flowing every second. After a while, it adds up," said Daniel McCarty, acting executive chief of the Philadelphia Fire Department.
Officials said at least eight businesses were affected by the flooding.
"We have about eight feet of water in the basement," said Brandy Deieso, owner of The Little Apple Gift Boutique.
As pumps worked to clear the water, business owners began assessing the damage.
"All of our boiler systems, our air conditioning, hot water tanks... inventory wise, I couldn't even estimate. It's tens of thousands of dollars," Deieso said.
Main Street is home to many small businesses, and owners say community support is helping them cope.
"This is a tight-knit community, we've all been here a long time," said Bruce Cooper, owner of Jake's and Cooper's Wine Bar.
Officials traced the break to a 75-year-old pipe that cracked. The exact cause of the failure has not yet been determined."
