"WASHINGTON (7News) — D.C. officials are still making emergency repairs after a sanitary sewer main broke on Monday and spilled about 6,200 gallons of sewage in Northeast near Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.
DC Water, the agency that handles the city’s sewer system, said on Thursday that it is making repairs that could take weeks.
There were two overflows from the broken 108-inch sanitary sewer main on Monday that leaked sewage into the street and a nearby waterway at Anacostia Avenue and Ponds Street NE.
The line had failed overnight, releasing the diluted, untreated wastewater onto the street and into a nearby waterway that feeds the Anacostia River, according to DC Water.
As a result of the break, officials said a large sinkhole formed in the 1500 block of Anacostia Avenue NE. Roadways, park entrances, and nearby parking areas have also been closed.
“We continue to monitor the situation and are installing shorting around the pipe to provide more permanent containment while repairs are underway,” the agency said in a statement."
