trenchless tuesday
12.12.2022
Cassie: Hi everyone. Welcome to Trenchless Tuesdays. Michael and I are going to be kicking this off in 2023. You're going to be seeing our smiling faces hopefully every Tuesday in 2023. But we both had really busy weeks last week with pipe inspections and some job sites, so we thought we would bring this to you a few weeks early. Thanks, Michael.

Michael: Absolutely. Thanks, Cassie.
Cassie: So you guys are going to be seeing us from hotel rooms, from job sites, from inspections. We're going to do this from wherever we can once a week.

Michael: I guess I'll go ahead and kick it off.
Cassie: Yep.

Michael: Last week I was up in Wyoming and... Start off with the message of this one. The message is to measure your pipes. So job site was supposed to include 670 feet or so of 54-inch lining inside of a 60-inch by 90-inch CMP. So got out there the day that the crew was digging the pit. So they dug about a 35-foot-long by, call it, 15 foot wide pit at the back of this parking lot, and you can see them digging the pit here as well. And then I left the job site, went to look at another culvert, came back at night when they had dug it up, and my apologies for the blurry video, but the pipe for about 300 feet of it was definitely not six inch by 90.

It was more like a 35 by 50. So having already ordered a 54-inch OD pipe, that was not going to fit. So we're looking at different plans, but we had a video for you guys as well, the job site, from when they were digging up. So this pipe goes 670 feet under this strip mall parking lots, straight across a main road in the city, and then across a park as well, right in front apartment building. So one, is to line it with a smaller pipe, half the distance, and just compromise some of that flow capacity they thought they would've had. Option two is to rip up the entirety of the road because they already bought the pipe and they're hoping to get some good use out of it. So that is what we're working with. I'm sure we'll keep you guys posted on it, but that was a little bit from my week in Wyoming.
Cassie: So moral of the story is measure before you order.

Michael: Measure your pipes. Yes.
Cassie: Yeah. I am going to share my screen now.
Michael: All right.
Cassie: So I was busy in Portland, Oregon last week looking at a very large project, a 48-inch pipe. And Michael, can you see my picture okay?
Michael: Yeah.
Cassie: Okay. So all this pipe was far enough underground. We can only access it through manholes. So I'm just going to show you guys this. You can see obviously how rusted out the bottom is in this pipe, the rocks in it. One of the things I really wanted to emphasize on today's call is just looking down the manhole and sticking a camera and a flashlight in it is not good enough sometimes, because of issues like this. This looks straight, but what we discovered when we actually climbed down into some of the manholes that you see me looking at and here, is there were actually lateral connections that we didn't know about that weren't on the engineer's plans coming in. As well as you guys can see, this pipe takes a very big dog leg left.

So we knew about two of the bends in the pipe, but we actually discovered two more by crawling through these manholes and actually getting down in the pipe. So really that's all I wanted to show you guys, is that by getting in the pipe and actually crawling through it in sizes that you can, sometimes you're going to find things you didn't even know were going to be there. Right, Michael?
Michael: Absolutely. Moral story is measure your pipes.
Cassie: Measure your pipes.
Michael: Yes.
Cassie: All right. Well thank you guys. That's this week of Trenchless Tuesdays, and we look forward to bringing you guys a lot more of these. Thanks, Michael.
Michael: All right, thanks Cassie.
